Stationery Show Run Down

24 May

Hello lovelies!

I am excited to share my first ever National Stationery Show experience with all of you on this grey Thursday.  I am still bursting with all the amazing paper goods, and the fabulous community of people I feel so lucky to be a part of.  I have that buzzy/happy, can’t sleep feeling just recounting all of the ideas that have come out of the show.  Time to get to work!

So a bit about the show. The National Stationery Show takes place annually in May at the Javitz Center in New York City.  There are hundreds of booths filled with the most amazing letterpress, gold foil, engraved, illustrated, screen-printed, watercolor-ed, and the list goes on.  I spent nearly two full days walking the show and trying to get to all my favorite designers as well as scout out some new ones.  It was jaw-dropping how much gorgeous, original stationery products there were at the show.  I consider myself to be a bit of an expert, and the show totally humbled me.  There was SO much I hadn’t even seen before.

So here’s a little rundown on some of my favorite new designers and some that I already adore.  Enjoy! (and please excuse my crappy iPhone photos)

Blossoming

17 May

Hi friends!  Lots of catch you up on – namely that I’ve been dabbling in flower work.  As you probably know from my blog, flowers are one of my true loves.  From my childhood picking wildflowers, to asking my parents to tell me the names of every plant species in their respective yards, to obsessing over blooms and bulbs as a bride, I have never been able to get enough.

I’ve taken my passion on the road, and enrolled in a 4-series course at the New York Botanical Gardens.  The class just finished up yesterday – wahhh!  I learned a variety of styles from Cascade to English Garden to Victorian and more.  And the best part is that I had the chance to put my sweet new skills to work on an ad campaign for wedding dresses this past Tuesday at the Metropolitan Building in Long Island City.  Check out my progress below:

Finished products!

I love my flowers like I love my stationery.  I could spend hours playing around with them, dreaming up new combinations, and perusing others’ work.  I hope to keep playing!

Wednesday Sniffles

2 May

Hi friends!

Coming at you from my couch with a ferocious cold this week.  Between being couch ridden for three days, and this rainy weather, my spirits could use some boosting.  This week I had to cut out some of my favorite things including yoga, my flower class at the New York Botanical Garden, dinners with friends, and meetings in order to get healthy and not infect others.  Uggg… the worst.

I also received some sad news that today – my online shop and product was going to be featured in one of my favorite magazines, but it looks like it will no longer make it in this month.  ahhh the highs and lows of being a business owner and being super passionate about what I do.  Sometimes it just stings when you KNOW there are tons of people out there who need to KNOW about your product, and you reaching them depends on so many factors outside your control.  Oh well…. trying to stay breezy about it all. Being sick just makes the whole thing feel a lot worse.

But alas, we take the good with the bad.  And remember that these highs and lows come in cycles (like real estate… hah).  Silver lining: I’m going to see Newsies on Broadway tonight (maybe Christian Bale will make an appearance?) with my main squeeze and have a delicious dinner at Maialino planned for Friday night thanks to an amazing wedding gift from friends.  Looks like things are already looking up…..

Cherry Blossom Religion

24 Apr

I am officially it’s first member, and worshiping it.  Have you ever been to a cherry blossom festival of any kind?  If so, you probably catch my drift.

AP and I headed to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden last Saturday afternoon to catch the tail end of hundreds of blossoming cherry trees.  It was one of the most spectacular sights either of us had ever witnessed. We spent some QT under the trees just staring up at these magical pink pom poms and watching the petals rain down as the breezes blew them to the ground.

Not only beautiful, but a reminder that nature is more beautiful and powerful than anything we can possibly control.  Enjoy some of my iPhone pics.  On my list of goals is a proper camera and a tutorial from Tory.

Step Away

18 Apr

My step-dad is a craftsman and made me an amazing new walnut desk for our apartment and for my work station.  Only problem is, getting it from Boston to NYC. It may require some type of U Haul action.

I digress.  When I get my desk here, I think I need to put this on the wall in front of it. I have been spending way too much time on the computer lately. ‘Tis one thing that is very difficult about starting your own business and having work-a-holic tendencies – it’s hard to take a break.
